James Callis On Slice of SciFi for Show #088

December 16, 2006 by Sam Sloan   || Category: Coming to Slice

The British/Jewish actor James Callis will be our very special guest on the next Slice of SciFi show #088 on December 20, 2006.

As a graduate of the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, Callis has starred in several stage, TV, radio and big screen productions in the last 10-years. Before landing the juicy role of Dr. Gaius Baltar on Battlestar Galactica his most internationally recognized appearance was opposite Renee Zellweger in the two Bridget Jones flicks.

Early in his career he was honored with the Jack Tinker Award - a Theater Critics recognition as the Most Promising Newcomer after starring on stage opposite veteran actor Bob Hoskins in “Old Wicked Songs.”

Since that time James has worked on various British radio and television programs, as well as return trips to the stage at the famous Soho Theater.

In 2003 everything in his life changed forever when he landed the highly coveted role of the brilliant, but spineless Gaius Baltar on the hit SF television show “Battlestar Galactica.”

One of his most recent performances on the big screen was in the indie film “One Night With the King,” the moving story of the biblical Esther and her fight to save her people from the clutches of the evil Haman, the Amelekite. Callis played Haman in a riveting performance.

Here is what else we have in store for you on the next Slice of SciFi Show:

In the News -
Obviously after seeing what China did this past week they didn’t listen to Sam’s Editorial from last week’s show, or did they? Hmmmmm!
A British Star Trek UberFan goes bellyup bankrupt and it will blow you away how he manged to do it.
Because of the recent success of several SF shows on network TV, the execs are having a scifi feeding frenzy. We’ll share what some of their plans are for your viewing pleasure over the next couple of seasons.

Movie News -
When the stars of “This Island Earth” made the B-Movie, they had no idea of the classic SF film it would turn out to be, and is it too early to talk about “Bond 22?” We think not!

TV Talk -
We take a look at Canada’s highly successful and much acclaimed award-winning SF series “Re-Genesis.” Time to start knocking down some doors to get it on the tele for the rest of us.

In the Future -
Spielberg is back bringing SF to TV and this time, believe it or not, he is trying it on Fox. And, Showtime, the pay cable network will try horror soap on its network with a weekly spooker called “The Canyon.”

James Callis, the stories just mentioned, our regular contributors and so much more will be yours to enjoy on the next Slice of SciFi Show #088 ready for download and listening on December 20, 2006.

Why was his religion even mentioned? surely it’s irrelevant that hes jewish.

I was going to ask the same question, Vanamonde. What does his being Jewish have anything to do with this interview. No one says English/Muslim actor Alexander Siddiq when they talk about him and his work in “Deep Space Nine” and “The Nativity Story.” Leave them out, please.

For the same reason that the fact that he is British was named. You have to get beyond the religious aspect of Jewish. For those of us who are Jewish, many recognize (some of, course don’t) the fact that we are more than a religion and existed over a thousand years before the religion even came into existence. You can be Jewish and have little or nothing to do with the Jewish religion. Being a muslim is indead being a follower of the Islamic religion of Muhammed, whether one is Arab or some other part of the human race - but being a Jew does not necesarily imply one is a follower of the religion of Moses. To be a member of Judaism as a religion one must go through a series of religious steps to make that happen and it is open to all races, however, to be a Jew one needs only to be born to a “Hebrew” mother.

If we were having this discussion 3000 years ago then it would have been proper to call him a British Hebrew, or myself an American Hebrew, but that term is lost on most of humankind today and is better understood as British Jew or Jewish and American Jew or Jewish. Jews are more than the sum parts of their acceptance of a certain creed laid down nearly 4000 years ago by a man who may or may not have ever existed. Jews are a race of people that have been in existence for over 6000 years. And speaking as an American Jewish person I can call Mr. Callis a British Jewish person if I so desire. Afterall, he is one of ours and I am the news director of this site. ;) But, now I am just getting into an area that is best done either privately or on our forum section, to which you can go to by clicking on the Link located on the left hand side of the SoSF Homepage. :)
