The Star Trek dedicated website TrekWeb is reporting that actor Tom Cruise, friend of director J.J. Abrams, is rumored to be very interested in appearing in the next movie installment in the Star Trek franchise. Tom is said to be a huge fan of Star Trek and would be delighted to make a cameo in the film.
The story first broke on the WENN entertainment news service and picked up by both TrekWeb and Canada’s TV Guide magazine, which said, “He didn’t even need to be begged to appear in it.”
Don’t pin too much on the information – at this point it is all still rumor. Whether one likes Cruise or not, he is a gigantic box office draw and even a small cameo would bring Star Trek to an even broader audience than it currently reaches and could snatch up literally hundreds of thousands of future fans.

Or pound the last nail in its coffin.

NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Steve James says
NOOOOO! This would do more harm to the Star Trek franchise than good! I think that as an “actor” …Cruise is very good and I do enjoy his acting work but as a person, I have grown to dislike him. He is …to quote Kird from ST3: “He’s fruity as a nutcake”. This would undoubtedly drive more long time Trek fans and even potential Trek fans away and ruin the chances for future incarnations of Trek whether it be movies or TV series. As I’ve said, I like his acting, he does a fine job but if he makes any type of appearance on Trek it will drive another nail into the coffin and that is the last thing any of us fans want!

“…he is a gigantic box office draw…”
Shouldn’t that be “was” instead of “is”. Ever since he went loco, people have been turning away from him in droves. If anything, he’s a pariah to any project he’s associated with now.
Steve James says
Just making a correction to a “typo” in my above post. I committed a crime against Kirk by mispelling his name 🙁
…to quote Kirk from ST3: “He’s fruity as a nutcake.
Ari from Boston says
If it was just a cameo along the lines of the current king of Jordan’s cameo on DS9 (random Starfleeter walking down a corridor), then I’d be okay with it. Give him a single line of dialogue, and I probably won’t even bother to see the film.
Miranda says
Christian Slater had a one liner.. Tom can have a one liner too… any more than that and I will lose a LOT of respect for JJ.
Jeremy from Seattle says
If its along the lines of Christian Slater in the Undiscovered Country, that’d be cool. As much as I dislike the idea of Big Named actors in my movie, its fun to have cameos.
Jeremy from Seattle says
Miranda, same wavelength…same wavelength.
Kurt says
Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!
No, wait, I mean:
Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuise!
Tony says
How about Tom as a bad guy under 65 kilos of latex? It doesn’t have to be 65 kilos..it would just be more fun that way.
David from Australia says
CoffeeJedi, he didn’t go loco, he fired his publicist and hired his sister. Free from his leash his actual personality came out.
Was Christian Slater’s cameo announced before the release, I don’t think so. If the francise needs Tom Cruise to breath new life into it then maybe its time to let it die. Anyway, I can’t imagine having an big star make a cameo would get more people to go to a movie.
If they must have Tom Cruise in the movie put him in a red shirt and kill him near the end. That way those people who came just to see him will have to sit through the entire movie first.
Oh wait, that won’t work they’ll spend the movie asking each other “Was that him?”, “Have you seen him yet?”, Where is he?”, “Are you sure his in this?”.
Beam me up, Jimmy!
Les perkins says

Scientology and SciFi? A match made in fiction.
Sam says
I thought scientology was scifi – Ron L. Hubbard? Hello! Thank the gods they didn’t design a religion after his Battlefield Earth novel or ole Tommy boy would be styling in dreadlocks. 🙂
Neil C says
No one would be able to take Cruise seriously and it would make Trek look like a joke.
I think they’re trying too hard to draw in a crowd with this rumour. Star Trek has never needed established popular actors to play main characters in an attempt to boost popularity, its the unknown actors making a character their own that Trek fans have adored down the years.
Sure we’ve had one offs like Christopher Lloyd and F. Murray Abraham, but at least neither one of them had their normal face on display, (which is probably just as well Abraham, sorry).
Anyway, people dont want to see Tom Cruise in any capacity, not real fans anyway, I dont care if he is good friends with the director. I would suggest that even a cameo would take away from the story itself, and add an unwelcomed air of expectation to cinema goers. And besides, there have been so many rumours and so much hype and speculation about this film, quite frankly I’m fed up trying to work out which rumours are true and which are not. I just wish the producers would come out and say ‘This is whats happening and here’s who we want involved’.
This probably wont happen any time soon. Sadly, I dont see any way to bring Star Trek back to life without destroying the Fan spirit which brought it into the iconic status it has been at for so long. We’ve had so many good films and series and there just doesnt look to be a way to carry it on. I hope I’m wrong, for the sake of all fans and those who have faith in humanity, but I feel like we’re already at the wake and the funeral is yet to be confirmed.
Heres hoping we still have something to believe in when the 23rd century really begins.
Sam says
Not sure I would call Academy Award nominated Abraham a “one offs,” nor would I lump Christopher Plummer in that category, but I agree with your idea that Star Trek has generally not used or really needed a big named actor apart from Shatner, Nimoy or Kelley. The stories and the interpersonal relationships of the bridge crew have always been what was the driving force behind the legendary franchise.
