‘Gate Expectations: SG-1 OK’d for Two Films
Stargate SG-1 may be winding down its 10-year-run this spring, but here’s some exciting news for its fans. MGM has granted a green light “and enough money” to produce two movies, most likely for DVD, executive producer Brad Wright tells TV Guide. The first flick will tie up most of the finale’s loose threads — “It’s the climax of the Ori story line” and will be written-directed by exec producer Robert Cooper. The second film, penned by Wright, will involve time travel, and both projects should debut in the fall of 2007. Though no deals are signed, SG-1’s stars are said to be “very eager” to continue. “They’re not big-budget [films] by any definition, but for us it’s pretty good,” says Wright. “As we’ve proven over the years, just give us little more money and we can make pretty good television, or DVDs.
“There’s a sense of an era for us ending,” Wright continues, “but at the same time, we’re all positive because of the prospect of continuing forward with movies and the introduction next year of Stargate Worlds, a massive multiplayer online game.”
Finally. But I wanted an eleventh Seaosn so this sucks in comparison. 16 hours for a TV Season compared with 4 hours we will get. Very dissapointing. If they slamming this straight out on DVD, why not launch it as a full season on DVD rather than two movies? MGM are good for fighting but suck for this. Big dissapointment.
I don’t see this as a bad thing. Yes, I’d rather have an 11th season, but this is clearly the next best thing. They’ve stated that they’re making two movies, but if sales are high, I’d expect that there would be more afterwards.
Plus, with “Atlantis” still going, Stargate is nowhere near dead.

Hmm… Didn’t I hear some podcast talking about the merit of direct to DVD tv shows…. Rings a bell but I just cant put my finger on it….
If Slice of Scifi has played any part in planting the seed on this idea, well done guys! I know that not everyone is a fan of Stargate but if it works for this show, then lets hope that it passes on to others (threshold, surface, firefly, babylon 5 etc…)
I too would’ve rathered S11, but at least we’re getting something. And to have it announced this soon after the cancellation is a good sign that everyone behind it (except maybe SciFi Channel) is eager to get the ball rolling again.
And on another not…am I the only person who thinks that Atlantis won’t do very well without SG-1 alongside it, both in quality and ratings?
You may have a point Bronzethumb, except that MGM and SCI FI Channel have already announced that many of the regular cast members from SG-1, including Richard Dean Anderson, will be popping in from time to time in the Pegasys Galaxy to prop up the ratings for the Atlantis show.
I thank the studio, MGM, for believing in the fans and giving us a proper ending to a beloved show.

I’m betting this will quickly become 2 DVD releases *per year*. The show has amortized itself over the years, so the main expense is probably the actors contracts… and this strategy cuts way down on that.

Unless other things in the Stargate rumor mill have changed, there is suppose to be another show coming out in the franchise (”Stargate: Maya”, maybe?). I’m assuming (and yes, I do know where that can get me) that it would eventually take the place of the missing SG-1.
