Spiner announced last Friday as Star Trek celebrated it’s 40th anniversary, that he has ruled out a return as Data in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Trek XI.
“I don’t think I should play Data anymore. I think I’m too old to play him anymore to be honest,” he said. “I think it would look stupid putting that make-up on me at this point. There certain characters that I think work in a youthful way and I think I really skated along the edge in the last couple movies as it was.”
He joked: “Having said that, you’ll see the movie now and there I’ll be in all the make-up — then you’ll know I got a very sweet deal.”
Paramount is targeting Star Trek XI for a 2008 release.

We forget that Actors AGE, just like everyone else. And the characters they play must age with them, if the characters also deal with the concept of time. Though Brent Spiner may not be able play Data, he could play an ancestor to Data’s creator, giving Data a grandfather or even a great-grandfather. But that would have to be up to the person creating the film. The person may be going in a totally different direction than any of us expect. We do know from the poster that it is going to be an earlier era. There is also one area earlier than Captain Kirk and Spock, one era that was only dealt with once. And that is about Captain Christopher Pike (from the original pilot), what about his missions. Perhaps that is one that also needs exploring.
