On SciFi TV This Week

August 7, 2006 By Sam Sloan 2 Comments

SciFi_28UK_TV_channel29_logo.jpgAlien abduction hysteria provokes four upstanding citizens of Eureka to kidnap a visiting congressman, landing Sheriff Carter in a deadly crossfire this Tuesday at 9/8C.

Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis get a double dose of danger as SG-1 goes on an interplanetary monster-hunt, and a link to the makers of Atlantis (those elusive Ancients), just might lead to its destruction. The action begins Friday at 9/8C.

Stan Lee is not only looking for the next Superhero, but he has also created the next Supervillian. The Enforcer has been muted into “The Dark Enforcer.” As one of our heroes falls to temptation, another will simply fall when Stan puts them all to the test, one more time. “Who Wants To Be A Superhero?” all new episode this Thursday 9/8C.

Sean Patrick Flanery (The Dead Zone), a recent Guest on Slice of SciFi, travels to an alien planet seeking a new home in “Savage Planet.” What he finds, however, is pure terror. This world premiere movie is on The SciFi Channel, Saturday at 9/8C.

Someone needs to tell the SciFi Channel that science fiction is not horror!
Why can’t they produce decent sci-fi movies that AREN’T about big scary monsters? There’s alot of really interesting short-stories out there that wouldn’t require big budgets, and would be far more interesting to watch than this monster-of-the-week crap. Give us something inspiring! Something that examines our humanity and our relationship with emergent technologies. DON’T give us another “Mansquito” with a new name.
I’m pretty happy with Eureka so far, its keeping a lighter, more fun tone, and it doesn’t portray science as an evil force threatening to destroy humanity.

I dunno… I mean, I think the monster-of-the-week thing SciFi’s got going is ridiculous (“Mansquito” — tee hee!), but on the other hand, I think we *do* need to keep a wary eye on scientists, and our attitudes as a culture are always reflected in our art. (Science is a wonderful thing, but scientists are people, and therefore not quite always wonderful. 😉 )
