Word out on the edges of Orion’s Belt is that Jonathan Frakes (STAR TREK: The Next Generation) will be directing a short story by Harlan Ellison called “The Discarded.”
The actor turned director will helm the project as part of the new IDT Entertainment and ABC’s Masters of Science Fiction television series. Shooting is scheduled to run from July 23 to August 6 of this year on location in Vancouver, Canada. The scifi series is set to premiere this fall.
Originally published in 1959 “The Discarded” is the story of a ship of mutants that have been exiled from Earth but are later sought out as human civilization’s saviors and only hope for a cure from a deadly plague.

Frakes is a delightful man, has real acting and directing chops and is extremely genourous towards his colleagues. However, he is not a "science fiction" guy and doesn't pretend to be one.
