The Nebula Awards were presented in Tempe, Arizona on May 6, 2006 and our very own Slice of SciFi Team was on hand. The Nebula winners are selected by the membership of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA).
This year’s winners received their awards in the following categories:
Novel: “Camouflage,” by Joe Haldeman
Novella: “Magic for Beginners,” by Kelly Link
Novelette: “The Faery Handbag,” by Kelly Link
Short Story: “I Live With You,” by Carol Emshwiller
Script: “Serenity,” by Joss Whedon
The Andre Norton Award for Young Adult fiction was introduced this year and the first time winner was “Valiant: A Modern Tale of Faerie,” by Holly Black.
Special honors were afforded to Harlan Ellison who was named the Damon Knight Memorial Grandmaster for his lifetime achievements as an a accomplished science fiction writer and William F. Nolan was named Author Emeritus.
The Nebula Awards was founded as the Science Fiction Writers of America in 1965 by Damon Knight, the organization began with a charter membership of 78 writers; it now has over 1,500 members, among them most of the leading writers of science fiction and fantasy.

Wow, Harlan’s really starting to show his age. I barely recognized him.

He was quite spry, and a complete hoot at the Charity Auction (which split the raised proceeds between the Octavia Butler Memorial Scholarship and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund).
I mean, he sold a hotel burger he’d half-eaten AND the plate (which he said he’d sign) by touting that someone would have a chance to get an autographed sample of his DNA.
