The Headline That Shook The World
U.S. Army Lt. Walter Haut is dead at 83. Who is Walter Haut? – you may ask. While you may not know the name he certainly changed forever how mankind has viewed those strange unknown lights in the skies.
Walter Haut is the man responsible for telling the world in an official Army news release in 1947 that a real-life flying saucer landed in Roswell, N.M.
That headline shook the world out of it’s ignorance and complacency forever and the way it views the heavens has never been the same since. Because of that official news release and the nearly one-day delayed denial by the Army, a whole generation of seekers and investigators into unidentified flying objects (UFO’s) was born and a mythology surrounding the then unknown town of Roswell, New Mexico has become a phenomenon of its own that shows no signs of diminishing even to the present day.
Haut, a former spokesman for the Roswell Army Air Field, was given ordered instructions in writing on July 8, 1947, by his base commander Col. William Blanchard to release a newswire about a recovered flying saucer. As commanded, Haut issued it to the local newspaper where it was immediately picked up on the worldwide newswires. The Roswell Daily Record newspaper ran a bold headline on July 9, 1947: “RAAF Captures Flying Saucer on Ranch in Roswell Region.”
Long after the events of 1947 Haut, with two partners founded the International UFO Museum in Roswell.
Haut is survived by his daughter Julie Shuster and funeral arrangements have not been announced.

He was also survived by his older daughter MaryBeth Fields of Roswell, and I am his GodSon, and many people of Roswell who loved him. Great guy. And quite bright.

I remember mr. Haut. I have gone to the UFO museum in Roswell NM since I was real young and the story has been fascinating my whole life. I can remember seeing Mr. Haut on television and the whenver I would go and visit the museum I would go in the office and talk to him with my dad. He was and intresting and very nice man.
