‘Harry’ conjures up $201 mil in 10 days
Magic and music were in the air this Thanksgiving holiday as the young wizard of Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” and the man in black from 20th Century Fox’s “Walk the Line” held off six new wide releases to retain the top two spots at the boxoffice for the second consecutive weekend.
“Goblet of Fire” lit up an estimated $54.9 million during the weekend and $81.3 million for the five days, advancing the estimated 10-day cume to a stellar $201.1 million — reaching that mark in the fourth-fastest time on record. The fourth picture in the Potter franchise is tracking well ahead of the first three films for the same period, besting the $186 million of “Sorcerer’s Stone,” the $148 million of “Chamber of Secrets” and the $157 million of “Prisoner of Azkaban.”
The three-day weekend boxoffice total for the Mike Newell-directed “Goblet” was down a relatively modest 46% from its $102.3 million bow. “Goblet” is the third Warner Bros. release this year to surpass $200 million — an industry first. The worldwide cume to date for “Goblet” is a staggering $408.1 million.
The well-received Johnny Cash biopic “Line” stepped into second place with an estimated weekend of $19.7 million, down 12% from its debut, taking in $27.6 million for the five days. The Joaquin Phoenix-Reese Witherspoon starrer from director James Mangold has generated a robust $54.7 million in 10 days.
