Veteran actor Harold J. Stone has died of natural causes. He was 92.
Stone was a much sought after character actor in both movies and television, whose face and voice were instantly recognizable. He played 150 different roles on television alone. He also was a mainstay in 30 theatrical features.
He was one of Alfred Hitchcock’s favorite actors of choice and was used by the genius director on five different episodes (a record) of the famous “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” weekly anthology program.
Stone could do it all and his five decade career is a testament to that fact.
Sci-Fi fans may remember him as Admiral Jiggs Starke on the TV show “Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea”; but his most recognizable and famous role was that of gangster Frank Nitti, concierge to the notorious mob boss Al Capone in the movie adaptation of The Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre.
Stone is survived by two sons, a daughter and four grandchildren.
