NBC Universal’s new sci-fi thriller “Surface” has been on the air now for several weeks, but the big question is: “Can it stay afloat?”
I have watched the show since it premiered three weeks ago and I have to admit that as clumsy as the program can be at times, I like it.
Lake Bell (Boston Legal) is perfectly cast as the oceanographer heroine and Rade Serbedzija as her government-owned scientist nemesis lends credibility to the storylines.
The plot has interweaving story arcs that include Bell’s character, her son, Naval Officers in the South Antarctic Sea, a family in San Diego, the oceanographic institute in Monterey, and fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico.
What joins these widely dispersed groups is they’re the first to meet a new form of sea life. But what they don’t know yet is that they are on the verge of a world disaster. Question is… are these newly discovered creatures part of the solution or the problem?
“Surface” is a series full of continuously evolving twists that deliver across several long-term arcs. I only hope that NBC shows more sense than FOX did with Firefly and allows “Surface” to find its audience and get established. If they do, it is my guess that we will see more of this new sea creature than has yet been revealed. If NBC is in a hurry to dump it, then “Surface” may be doomed to sink fast.
Just a side not: “Surface” is not the best sci-fi to come along in recent memory, but it is certainly far better than CBS’s “Threshold” or ABC’s “Invasion.”
On the Uncle Sam scale of 1 to 5, I give it a 3 with the potential for getting better.

I’d give it at least a 3.5, maybe a 4, but that’s just me. I like Threshold about as much. But they’re different shows with completely different storylines and concepts. I don’t watch Invasion. My dad says it’s almost like a soap opera, and that’s as good a reason as any for me to keep away. I watch too many TV shows as it is.
Anyway, I wish more shows were as deep, involving, and prolonged as this show seems to be. Finding out new things each week to expand my view on what’s going on is a great thing for me. It makes me think. And I believe that’s a good thing.
