A book auction garnered $90,000.00 (US) for the “First Amendment Project [FAP].”
FAP is a not-for-profit organization that lobbys for the protection of freedom of information, expression and petition. This auction, which gives the highest bidder the right to be named a character, place or thing in a book written by best selling authors, is the organization’s largest fund raising event.
The big winner in this year’s event, according to the Associated Press, was Pam Alexander of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Her bid of $25,100.00 guarantees that her brother’s name, Ray Huizenga, will appear in Stephen King’s new horror novel “Cell.”
19 other authors and their works, including Lemony Snicket and SF writer David Brin, were on the block this year.
