Herb J. Wright, creator of the Ferengi, and one of the early pioneers with Gene Roddenberry in the launching of STAR TREK: The Next Generation, died in his sleep of natural causes on August 24th. He was only 58.
Herb’s collaborations with Gene Roddenberry go back 32 years when Gene was working on “The Questor Tapes” for Universal Studios. Herb was at the studio producing “The Six Million Dollar Man” when he got wind of Roddenberry’s energetic script about an android protecting humanity.
After slipping onto the sound stage to catch a peek at what was going on he struck up a conversation with Gene and a lifelong partnership was forged.
“Herb was one of the good guys,” said Eugene (Rod) Roddenberry, Jr., Gene’s son. “He was a gentle thinker — someone I could instantly trust…..He wanted to do the right thing with the Roddenberry name.”
Wright is survived by his wife Elaine, daughter and 3 grandchildren.
